Deepavali is the one night the whole South buys crackers. Houses are cleaned, lamps are lit at the doorstep, new clothes come out, and from early morning the street belongs to whoever woke up first.

Sankranti is the biggest family festival in the Telugu states. Houses fill with relatives for three days, muggulu are drawn at every doorstep with gobbemmalu in the middle, Bhogi fires burn at dawn and the kite strings come out.

Ugadi opens the Telugu and Kannada new year. The house gets mango leaves at the door, the family eats Ugadi pachadi with all six tastes in it, and the panchangam for the coming year is read out.

Christmas midnight and the last night of December are the other two nights of the year when Bengaluru is properly loud, especially around the older city neighbourhoods and wherever the apartment complexes organise something.
